Rohloff Oil Volume Update

OElsets

Rohloff is delighted to announce that following long and exhaustive testing in both commuter and touring cycling conditions, we are so confident in the performance of the "SPEEDHUB All Season Oil', that we have now taken steps to reduce the volume of oil used, from 25ml, to just 12.5ml. This amendment will not only have zero negative affects upon SPEEDHUB function and durability, but will also aid the reduction of waste. SPEEDHUB Oil set article numbers will be amended to show this revised oil volume, as a change in the running series and as such, should start to be noticed in shops as of October 2023, regardless of the age of the hub.

Article-Overview:

The bottles used in the single-use sets remain the same size, however the volume of 'All Season Oil' is halved -> All Season Oil 12.5ml / Cleaning Oil 25ml.

Art. 8410 Oil Set (1x All Season Oil 12.5ml / 1x Cleaning Oil 25ml / 1x Syringe with Filling Tube / 1x Oil Drain Screw)
Art. 8411 Oil Change Kit (1x All Season Oil 12.5ml / 1x Cleaning Oil 25ml / 1x Oil Drain Screw)

Workshop size oil sets will be supplied with new "All Season Oil" bottle sizes, in accordance with the new oil volumes:

Art. 8409 for 10x oil changes (1x All Season Oil 125ml / 1x Cleaning Oil 250ml)
Art. 8406 for 40x oil changes ( (1x All Season Oil 500 / 1x Cleaning Oil 1000ml)

Art. 8409S for 10x oil changes (1x All Season Oil 125ml / 1x Cleaning Oil 250ml / 10 x Oil Drain Screws)
Art. 8406S for 40x oil changes ( (1x All Season Oil 500 / 1x Cleaning Oil 1000ml / 40 x Oil Drain Screws)

This amendment is of course also applicable to the article numbers Art. 8406s & Art. 8409s as well

Technical Info:

During an oil change, a light volume of rest-oil remains stuck to the surface areas of all internal transmission components. This volume, which one is unable to extract during the oil change process, can add up to a total of approximately 12.5ml.

The reduced volume of oil in our oil change kits, combined with the residual oil still inside each SPEEDHUB, will ensure the 25ml of oil previously prescribed, is still present to ensure the correct function and optimal performance of each SPEEDHUB 500/14 transmission.

To ensure the rinsing process is completed as thoroughly as possible, the volume of 'Cleaning Oil' will remain at 25ml per oil change, as before.

This is very important for all riders to be aware as the hub requires much less oil then before.   It's been many years of 25ml so I'm hoping this will help get the word out to all existing owners.  As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected].

Rohloff A12 Hub

Rohloff has been supporting Thru axle frames for some time now and although it requires a bit more homework, it can be done!  Looks amazing on the Chromag frame.

Surly Moonlander Rohloff Build

It's done!  The conversion is complete (minus the cranks).  The offset of the rear hub still makes me do a double take but it works.

For the wheel, we used a 203mm Monkey bone rather than the Speedbone that Surly's article recommended that I'm sure others will reference when they do their search.  With the OEM2\Monkey bone combination, we were able to set it up so that we can move the hub back and forth to be able to serve a few purposes.

  • Chain tensioning
  • Wheel removal
  • Chain stretch

We were also able to remove the rear wheel without having to loosen the rear caliper which to me is a big plus compared to using the Speedbone.  Also we used a TS hub rather than a CC hub since it's a horizontal dropout and the locknut provides a nice secure method to tighten down the wheel.  Another thing we've used in the past that works very well for horizontal dropouts is Surly's Tugnut.  It provides a great way to tension the wheel precisely and securely.  We may install one on the right dropout.

However Surly's article is extremely important in that they are approving the use of the disc tab as a fixing point for the hub.  It's important to get the frame vendor approval before the use of the OEM2/Monkey bone solution.  It's a much cleaner setup than the standard torque arm fixed to the chain stay as you can see below in the pictures.

Still a few things to clean up, cable routing etc.  Install Race Face Turbine Fatbike Cinch cranks to get the proper chainline, install rim tape, tire and we're all good to go.  Pics of final build to come, stay tuned!  As usual, if you have any questions regarding setup and configuration when it comes Rohloff, feel free to email us!
