We saw this at the Interbike show last year and was really impressed. We've been to the Interbike a few times and every year something unique catches our eye. Chris King has pretty much ruled the roast and has become the defacto standard in high end headsets and with good reason. Smooth bearings, lightweight, flawless performance, great seals and an excellent warrant with customer service to back it all up. Now Cane Creek, the inventor of the Aheadset threadless headset has decided to give Chris King a bit of competition. The 110 is aimed directly at the high performance market.
Hard-Pack Alloy – The cups and spacers are machined from a custom drawn seamless tube of 7050 Plus Aluminum. This manufacturing process allows for an incredibly strong material without a weight penalty.
Captured Compression Ring – Variations in steerer tube diameters are common and sometime shims are needed to correct this. The “Captured” compression ring keeps these shims in place while maintaining the simplicity of the system.
Split-Lip Bearing – By incorporating a dual lip design the bearing gets twice the protection of standard headsets while decreasing friction.
Low Weight – Without its spacers or preload assembly, the Cane Creek 110 is a remarkably light 97.5 grams. You won’t find a better performing, more durable headset. Finding a lighter one is just as unlikely.
The Cane Creek 110 comes standard with 17.5 mm of their new color-matched “scalloped” Interlok spacers. This design provides a solid interface between the top cover and the spacer stack
while shaving an additional 25% in weight off a standard alloy spacer stack.
The spacers are probably one of the nicest things that Cane Creek provide with the their headsets and people don't appreciate. We've been using Cane Creek headsets in a few of our Titus builds and it shows the attention to detail Cane Creek puts into their products. They snap together rather than the typical spacer that just sits ontop of one another. Cane Creek didn't need to include headset spacers but they do anyway and puts enough thought into them to grant them a patent.
Colour choices right now are limited to silver, red, black and blue which are basically the colours most people would buy anyway. Chris King definitely has a colour choice to match every taste out their but seeing how black and silver tend to satisfy a majority of cyclists, having 4 choices to start isn't too bad.
We really think people should take a look at this headset next time they're shopping for a new one and they should compare it directly with Chris King to see which they like better. If you need a Candy Apple Green headset to match your bike, then Chris King is your best bet but if black is your thing and you want a smooth headset with low stack height of 28.6mm, some really nice features and colour matched alloy headset spacers, give the 110 a look, I think you'll be pretty happy you did.
